My first foray in community theater directing was with "Sure Thing" by David Ives, part of a night of one-act plays called "Check Please!". The shows were perfomed on February 18, 19, 25, and 26, 2000 at The Alden Manor in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania.
I tried to follow all the rules for a first time director. I chose a one-act play. It was a comedy. It was great show (as any show written by David Ives would be. Theater fans, be sure to check one of his shows out. You'll be glad you did!). It had a small cast (only two people). It had minimal blocking (the actors most sat at the table the whole play). And I cast it with two great actors (Shawn Walker and Karen Padden). Basically, it was hard for me to screw up. Thank goodness, because I would have.
It was a great experience. I have a lot of fun memories from it.
